NADI Meeting on “Evolving and Emerging Non-Traditional Security Challenges in the Era of Disruptive World”
The NADI Meeting on “Evolving and Emerging Non-Traditional Security Challenges in the Era of Disruptive World” was held from 15 to 18 July 2024 in Krabi, Thailand, organised by the Strategic Studies Center (SSC), National Defence Studies Institute, Royal Thai Armed Forces. Major General Nirut Duangpanya, Director of SSC, chaired the Annual Meeting.
The NADI Meeting covered several non-traditional security (NTS) challenges, including climate change, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), cybersecurity, AI and other disruptive technologies, transnational crime, health challenges including pandemics, among others. The delegates provided recommendations, for the consideration of ASEAN and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), to address these NTS issues, and improving ASEAN coordination in dealing with NTS challenges, including greater cross-sectoral and private-public partnerships, enhancing existing ASEAN mechanisms including the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Groups (EWGs), conduct information-sharing, research, joint training and exercises, workshops, as well as improve legal frameworks. ASEAN Centrality should also be upheld in the process, and the ADMM, even as it focuses on NTS challenges, should not lose focus on addressing geopolitical and regional issues.
