The NADI Workshop on “Emerging Technologies and its Impacts on Defence and Security”, organised by the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS), Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam, was held from 29 to 30 September 2021. The delegates shared their respective country’s experiences in addressing the challenges posed by emerging technologies. These include cybersecurity threats, advances in artificial intelligence that could heighten these threats, and military applications of emerging technologies. Delegates highlighted how these challenges would impact regional defence and security in the context of the rivalry between China and the United States, as well as the implications for ASEAN. Delegates called for more dialogue within ASEAN to deal with these issues. The delegates provided recommendations, for the consideration of the ADMM, to strengthen ASEAN defence cooperation in tackling the challenges posed by emerging technologies.
