CENS Participates in Workshop on Collaborative Research on Terrorism and Political Violence

Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna (Head) presented a research briefing on “Complexity and the Evolution of Indonesian Terrorist Networks” during the Workshop on Collaborative Research on Terrorism and Political Violence, an event jointly organised by the Terrorist Research Initiative (TRI), a global consortium of academic institutions and think tanks engaged in cutting-edge research, and the University of Vienna. Associate Research Fellows Sulastri Osman (Coordinator of Radicalisation Studies Programme) and Joseph Franco also presented overviews of their respective research areas on Indonesia and the Philippines. The workshop was attended by personnel from the likes of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Austrian Interior Ministry.
CENS Visits West Midland Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU)

CENS delegation paid a visit to the West Midlands Police CTU to learn best local practices to counter violent extremism as well as promote community engagement. Present at the meeting were senior officers of the CTU. Further enriching the discussion was the participation of Prevent Engagement Officers and the Local Authority of Birmingham. Capping the discussion was a presentation by Professor Ramakrishna on the pathways leading to violent extremism.
CENS Meeting with Policy Exchange and MP Hazel Blears

CENS delegation visited Policy Exchange, a UK-registered educational charity. As a think tank, Policy Exchange is involved in empirical research to effect changes in UK public policy. The meeting was also attended by MP Hazel Blears, who sits in the Intelligence and Security Committee of the UK’s House of Parliament.

CENS Participates in International Conference on Engaging Partners for Capacity Building: United Nations’ Collaboration with Counter-Terrorism Centres

Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna (Head) was invited as a speaker and Sulastri Osman (ARF) as participant representing CENS at the International Conference on Engaging Partners for Capacity Building: United Nations’ Collaboration with Counter-Terrorism Centres, a high-level meeting organised by the United Nations Centre for Counter-Terrorism (UNCCT) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 16 and 17 February 2013. CENS was one of 28 centres worldwide invited to the high-profile event which aims to promote counterterrorism collaborations and synergies among resource institutions, training centres, think tanks and specialised research entities to build up global capacities on issues related to counterterrorism and countering violent extremism. The UNCCT regards CENS a good international resource to tap into for capacity-building efforts and networking in the Southeast Asian region.
