- 300 Net Sites in Region Linked to Terror Groups
KUALA LUMPUR: THE online threat posed by militant groups such as the Islamic State (IS) is substantial, as there are at least 300 websites and social media sites in Southeast Asia linked to such activities.
A research involving online extremism in Southeast Asia conducted by the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, revealed that terrorists used these sites to support the use of violence to uphold a political agenda and lure young minds into becoming militants.
The university’s International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR) Informatics Team leader Nur Azlin Mohamed Yasin said there were at least 100 websites and blogs promoting extremism in this region, most of which were in Bahasa Indonesia, while the remaining 200 sites were mostly on Facebook.
