After the recent saga where ASEAN ministers retracted a joint statement, academics said that there are still differences among ASEAN countries on the South China Sea issue. In the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Laos next month, there may be a repeat of the 2012 scenario, where a joint statement was not released. Assoc Prof Li Mingjiang from RSIS said the challenge is greater this year, as the situation is grimmer. Big countries inside and outside the region will wrestle to influence ASEAN’s stand during the process.
