12th NADI Meeting
The NADI 12th Annual Meeting on “ASEAN Defence Security Foresighting in the Next 2 Decades”, organised by the Strategic Studies Center (SSC), National Defence Studies Institute (NDSI), was held in the Holiday Inn Chiang Mai hotel, from 25 to 28 February 2019. Air Vice Marshal Poomjai Leksuntarakorn, Director, SSC, chaired the Annual Meeting.
There was general agreement among the delegates that the major regional issues moving forward are major power rivalry, terrorism, climate change, and threats arising from technological advancements, including cyberattacks. NADI delegates shared their respective country’s perspectives on these issues, and emphasised that maintaining sustainable security would require whole-of-government approaches to ensure peace and security. A few delegates presented on the attempts of their organisations to develop a scenario planning framework. The delegates provided recommendations, for the consideration of the ADMM, for NADI to consider studying the differing national considerations in doing foresighting, including holding a workshop to exchange views on the matter. Delegates also suggested recommendations for addressing the terrorist, cyber and climate change threats, including further discussions at NADI workshop.
The Chairman’s Report of the NADI 12th Annual Meeting, together with the agenda and programme, are attached.
