14th NADI Meeting
The 14th NADI Meeting, organised by the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS), Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam, was held virtually from 30 March to 1 April 2021. Ms Ampuan Yura Kasumawati binti Dato Paduka Haji Adnan, Acting Director of SHHBIDSS, chaired the Meeting.
There was general agreement among the delegates that ASEAN centrality must be maintained amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and emerging security threats. NADI delegates shared their respective country’s perspectives on the regional security outlook and the ADMM. Many saw the COVID-19 pandemic as a major economic and security threat that ASEAN countries must address. Other non-traditional security threats such as climate change, cybersecurity, and threats arising from technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence, were also highlighted. Other delegates underscored the importance of maintaining ASEAN centrality in the regional security architecture, especially in the context of heightening great power rivalry. The delegates provided recommendations, for the consideration of the ADMM, to enhance ASEAN centrality and strengthen future ADMM cooperation.
