    Welcome Message by Centre Head

As Head of the RSIS’ Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies (NTS Centre), it is my pleasure to welcome you to our website.

The Centre was established in May 2008, building on the success of the RSIS research programme on non-traditional security which started in 1999 and the founding of the Consortium of Non-Traditional Security Studies in Asia (NTS-Asia) in 2007. Having won various high profile grants over the years, including the competitive MacArthur Foundation Asia Security Initiative (ASI) grant in 2009 and the ASEAN-Canada Research Partnership grant in 2012, the Centre has since grown from a modest outfit to a team of 11 faculty, research and administrative full-time staff working on the six key NTS themes of Climate Change, Resilience and Sustainable Development; Energy Security; Food Security; Health Security; Peace, Human Security and Development; and Water Security.

The year so far has been an activity-filled year with the Centre organising and co-organising close to 7 international conferences, workshops and seminars. Among these include the 2nd International Conference on Asian Food Security, the Consultative Roundtable on ‘The Humanitarian Dimension and Victim Protection Aspects of Trafficking in Persons’ as well as the Policy Roundtable on ‘Securing Our Environmental Future: Bringing Sustainable Development Back In’. We will also be initiating a new publication series later in the year focusing on in-depth analyses of timely NTS issues. Our work is reaching out to a wider audience and we are confident that the Centre can contribute significantly to the NTS discourse as it serves its role as a thought leader in the field, and as a networking hub for researchers, policy analysts, policymakers, NGOs and media in Asia and farther afield interested in NTS issues.

I hope you will find this website useful and informative and I invite you to visit it regularly for updates on the Centre’s events, activities, recent publications and multimedia resources. This website remains a work in progress and I encourage you to contact us at [email protected] if you have any comments or suggestions as to how we can improve it further.

Thank you very much for your interest in the RSIS Centre for NTS Studies and I wish you an enjoyable read.
