Abstract

Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), and S. About the Speakers

Jusuf Wanandi is a Senior Fellow and co-founder of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Indonesia and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CSIS Foundation, Jakarta. He is Vice Chair of the Indonesian National Committee for the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (INCPEC), Co-Chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), and Co-Chair of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP), Indonesia.

 He is also President Director of the publishing company of The Jakarta Post Daily as well as Chairman of the Board of the Prasetiya Mulya Business School, and Chairman of the Foundation of Panca Bhakti University in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.

A lawyer by training, Mr. Wanandi was an assistant professor of law at the University of Indonesia, and has served in various national and international organisations over the course of his career. He was appointed as Secretary of the Indonesian Supreme Advisory Council; Secretary General of the National Education Council; and as four-term representative in the People’s Consultative Assembly. He was active in the Golkar Party between 1979 until 1988 as a member of the Central Board in various capacities.

He has written extensively in national and international magazines and newspapers and has edited a number of books on political and security developments in the Asia Pacific region.

Akihiko Tanaka is President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS).  Before assuming the current position, he had been Professor of International Politics at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, The University of Tokyo, for many years.  He served as President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from April, 2012 to September, 2015.  Mr. Tanaka was also Executive Vice President of The University of Tokyo (2009-2011). He is Chairman of the Board, Japan for UNHCR and a Distinguished Fellow at the JICA Research Institute. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in International Relations at the University of Tokyo in 1977 and Ph.D. in Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. He has numerous books and articles on world politics and security issues in Japanese and English including The New Middle Ages: The World System in the 21st Century (Tokyo: The International House of Japan, 2002) and Japan in Asia: Post-Cold-War Diplomacy (Tokyo: Japan Publishing Industry Foundation for Culture, 2017). He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2012 for his academic achievements.

Ong Keng Yong is Executive Deputy Chairman of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He is concurrently Director of the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS) at RSIS.

Mr Ong continues to hold the position of Ambassador-at-Large at the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is also Singapore’s non-resident High Commissioner to Pakistan and non-resident Ambassador to Iran. Mr Ong has been the Chairman of the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) since 2015.

Mr Ong was High Commissioner of Singapore to Malaysia from 2011 to 2014. He served as High Commissioner of Singapore to India and concurrently Singapore’s Ambassador to Nepal from 1996 to 1998.

Mr Ong served as 11^th Secretary-General of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), based in Jakarta, Indonesia from January 2003 to January 2008.

Mr Ong started his diplomatic career in 1979 and was posted to the Singapore Embassies in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and the United States of America between 1984 and 1994. From September 1998 to December 2002, he was Press Secretary to the then Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Goh Chok Tong, while holding senior appointments in the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, and the People’s Association in Singapore. From 2008 to 2011, he served as Director of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) in the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

Mr Ong graduated from the then University of Singapore with a LLB (Hons). He studied at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., USA, and graduated with a MA in Arab Studies.

Dewi Fortuna Anwar is a Research Professor at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and was the Deputy Chairman for Social Sciences and Humanities from 2001 to 2010. She was Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs from 2010 to 2015 and from 2015 to 2017 as Deputy for Government Policy Support to the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. She is also the Chair of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights at the Habibie Center, and a member of the Board of Advisors, the Institute for Peace and Democracy, the Bali Democracy Forum. Anwar was a member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (2008–2012), a member of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC), based in Stockholm, and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy, ANU, Australia.
