Abstract
Malaysia is currently grappling with toxic populism, where nativist narratives have entered mainstream discourse and permeated both government and business sectors. Central to this political climate are Malay youths, who feel increasingly marginalized and frustrated as their needs remain unmet.
IMAN Research initiated a study in mid-2023 to investigate the opinions, decisions, and actions of Malay youths aged 35 and below, focusing on Peninsular Malaysia. This demographic is pivotal in shaping Malaysia’s post-2018 political landscape. The research team engaged with diverse youth groups, including skinheads, Islamists, metal fans, and entrepreneurs across various regions like the East Coast, Northern States, and the Klang Valley.
Many of these youths are well-educated, politically conscious, and deeply involved in Islamist organizations. However, they share common feelings of disillusionment, particularly regarding the government’s failure to address their concerns and create opportunities for community-led initiatives. Despite their frustrations, these youths remain highly engaged in political discourse, thanks to platforms like social media and WhatsApp.
This presentation will explore the findings of the ongoing study, discuss the legacy issues that persist, and offer potential policy recommendations to instill hope and empower the next generation of Malaysians.
