Colonel General, Academician, Dr. Nguyen Huy Hieu joined the army in 1965 and went to battle fields in the South of Vietnam during 1965-1975 period. Thanks to his great successes, he was awarded the title Hero of the People’s Armed Forces in 1973 when he was so young.
In 1976, he continued to finish the high-school training program and started learning Russian to go to Russia for studying. In 1978, he entered the Defense Institute’s first training course and was appointed Colonel after finishing the course.
General Hieu kept the position of Deputy Chief of General Staff, Ministry of Defense in 1995-1998. He became Deputy Minister of Defense in 1998-2011.
He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the three consecutive Congresses of VIII, IX, and X.
He retired in 2011.
Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Chien is a high-ranking officer in the Vietnam People’s Army, ranked Lieutenant General, former Director of the Institute of Defense Strategy (2012-2014). Before 2004, LG Chien was lecturer, Deputy Director of the Military Technical Academy, held the rank of Colonel, Professor, and Doctor of Military Communications Engineering.
In 2004-2007, he was appointed as Deputy Commander of Hanoi Capital Command with the rank of Major General.
In 2007-2012, he became Deputy Director of the Institute of Defense Strategy.
LG Chien retired in 2014 but he is now still working hard and keep many important positions as follows:
- Deputy President of the Central Association for Science and Development of Human Resources and Talents of Vietnam
- Director of Strategic Institute for Development of Human Resources and Talents of Vietnam
- Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Human Resources and Talents Magazine
- Director of Hanoi Peace Research Institute
- Director of International Cooperation and Research Center, under the Vietnam-U.S Association
LG, Professor Nguyen Dinh Chien is now living in Hanoi, Vietnam.
