Lecture Abstract:
Since the formation of ISIS in June 2014, over 200 Malaysians have travelled, either individually or with their families, to join the group in Syria. Moreover, in 2015, Pew Research Center carried out a survey in Malaysia, revealing that around 11% of Muslims in Malaysia had favorable views towards ISIS. In light of this, the seminar will explore the potential socio-political causes and factors which can explain ISIS’s popularity in Malaysia. Also, the seminar will highlight the role of the government and the ulema in delegitimizing the rhetoric of ISIS in Malaysia.
Datuk Dr Fathul Bari will be conducting the seminar in Malay, which will be translated into English by a translator.
