About the Workshop

Understanding ASEAN is a two-day training programme organised by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), in partnership with the ASEAN Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Civil Service College.

The programme aims to equip officers with the skills and knowledge to constructively engage with their regional counterparts and to navigate ASEAN’s working structures and decision-making processes. It will provide an introduction to ASEAN, its key guiding principles and instruments, as well as developments in the three ASEAN Community pillars, namely the ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. The programme will also examine ASEAN’s current preoccupations and challenges.

Learners will have an opportunity to delve into case studies and practice negotiation skills in a contextualised simulation exercise.
