Alvin Tan is an Adjunct Fellow with Military Studies Programme (MSP) at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He has almost twenty years of experience in the Singapore Public Service and also taught at the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Military Institute. His research interests include the laws of armed conflict and international crimes, as well as legal theory and practical ethics regarding the impact of cyber warfare, AI, and emerging warfighting technologies.
He was a Chevening Scholar and graduated with a LLM (Distinction) from the University of Nottingham, where he subsequently completed a PhD in Law under a UK International Research Excellence Scholarship and School of Law Scholarship. He received his undergraduate degrees from the National University of Singapore and a MSc in International Political Economy (IPE) from NTU, where he was awarded the Lion Group Medal for top IPE student and the Tay Seow Huah Book Prize for overall best MSc dissertation.
