Leong Chan-Hoong, PhD, is Senior Fellow and Head of Social Cohesion Research Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University. Prior to this role, he was the Head of Policy Practice at the Verian Group, a global policy advisory firm. Chan-Hoong sits on various international academic and advisory boards, including the Centre for Applied Cross Cultural Research at Victoria University of Wellington, World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) Asia Pacific Council, and the International Academy for Intercultural Research (IAIR).
Chan-Hoong chairs the Rae and Dan Landis Award Committee and the Janet A Harkness Award Committee in IAIR and WAPOR, respectively. He has served as a Consulting Editor for various journals, including the International Journal of Intercultural Relations (IJIR), Asian Journal of Social Psychology (AJSP), Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), and was Guest Editor for the IJIR 2013 and 2019 Special Issues “Multiculturalism: Beyond Ethnocultural Diversity and Contestations” and “Viewing intercultural adaptation and social inclusion through constructs of national identity”, respectively. According to the bibliometric analysis published by IJIR in May 2023, Chan-Hoong is one of the top ten most established scholars in acculturation and intercultural research (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijintrel.2023.101785).
He read a PhD in Psychology (Wellington), and M.Sc.’s on Statistics and Applied Geographic Information Systems (NUS). His research focuses on immigrant integration and inclusion, inter-ethnic relations, national narratives, and human-environment interactions.
Beyond academia, he serves in the National Integration Council at the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth, and the Community Advisory Panel at the Ministry of National Development. He has consulted for the People’s Association, Urban Redevelopment Authority, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the Israel Science Foundation.
