A Tale of Two Scenarios: The Evolution of the Asia-Pacific Regional Security Landscape
09 Oct 2025

The dramatic rise of China and the raging Sino-US strategic rivalry are driving a profound transformation of the Asia-Pacific security landscape. The future of regional strategic outlook hinges to a large extent on the evolution of Sino-US relations.

A conflict between China and the United States would result in a binary and antagonistic mode, featured with deep division and fierce confrontation, while a Sino-US grand bargain would lead to a scenario characterised by the interplay among multiple actors with a blend of cooperation, hedging and competition.

In this RSIS Distinguished Public Lecture, Professor Wu Xinbo, Professor and Dean, Institute of International Studies, and Director at the Center for American Studies, Fudan University; discussed how China’s rise and the evolving Sino–US rivalry are reshaping Asia-Pacific security and regional stability.
