RSIS-SWP Dialogue 2025: State of Multilateralism in the International System Today
01 Oct 2025

RSIS hosted the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik – SWP) for the 7th RSIS-SWP Dialogue, a platform that offers a unique opportunity for two think-tanks from Asia and Europe to discuss issues of common interest.

The theme of the dialogue was “State of Multilateralism in the International System Today”, which featured three focused panels:

(i) Reality of Multilateralism in the Region Today
(ii) Geoeconomics and Multilateralism
(iii) Beyond Regional Multilateralism, with one speaker from RSIS and SWP sharing their perspective and regional insights.

The event featured three panel discussions that brought together diverse perspectives on multilateralism. The first panel examined the current realities of multilateralism in Asia-Pacific and Europe, and considered how best to strengthen it through concrete policy recommendations. The second panel focused on the intersection of geoeconomics and multilateralism, exploring how national security and resilience priorities can align with regional rules-based trading systems. The final panel looked beyond regional boundaries, highlighting opportunities for the EU and ASEAN to deepen cooperation by translating shared interests into practical collaboration. Ambassador Ong Keng Yong, Executive Deputy Chairman of RSIS, called on major powers to exercise leadership and responsibility, stressing that such actions are key to revitalising multilateralism.

The next iteration of the Dialogue will be held in Berlin in 2026.
