Singapore Maritime Week 2023
27 Apr 2023

RSIS held two events in conjunction with the Singapore Maritime Week between 24-28 April 2023. On 27 April, RSIS with the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC), The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) and the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) co-organised the annual Piracy and Sea Robbery Conference in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week 2023.

With the theme “Ways to Forge Stronger Partnerships to Ensure Safe and Secure Seas”, the conference featured a two-part panel discussion where panellists deliberated on the importance of “partnership” between the shipping industry and law enforcement agencies in combating piracy and armed robbery against ships, to ensure safe and secure seas for seafarers. The event highlighted current trends and the status of maritime piracy responsiveness in the Southeast Asian regions. It was attended by more than 100 participants mainly from the shipping industry and law enforcement agencies.

Later in the day, a select group of senior representatives from the shipping industry, law enforcement agencies, international organisations, and academia participated in the 2nd ReCAAP ISC-RSIS Maritime Roundtable. This closed-door event provided a platform for participants to deliberate on the “Criticality of Timely and Accurate Reporting – Assessment”. There were excellent discussions and exchange of views on factors which contribute to delayed and inaccurate incident reporting. Participants also had a robust deliberation on the topic, which included ways to tackle the issue moving forward.
