The RSIS Distinguished Public Lecture by S. Rajaratnam Professor in Strategic Studies M. Taylor Fravel focused on “The Future of US-China Relations and the Implications for the Global Order – Is Engagement Dead?”.
Professor M. Taylor Fravel is the Director of the Security Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was visiting RSIS as the S. Rajaratnam Professor for two weeks in August and interacted with RSIS faculty and researchers as well as policy-makers and researchers.
During the lecture, Professor Fravel spoke of how after a period of extensive economic engagement, US-China relations have shifted to a dynamic characterised by growing rivalry and competition. He spoke of the future of US-China relations, focusing on the balancing strategies that both countries are pursuing in the military, economic, and diplomatic domains, and examined the implications of these strategies and the broader rivalry for the global order. The lecture was moderated by Ambassador Ong Keng Yong, Executive Deputy Chairman of RSIS

The S. Rajaratnam Professorship in Strategic Studies at RSIS was inaugurated on 31 August 1998 to enable the School to invite distinguished scholars in strategic studies and related fields to participate in its activities. The professorship was established in honour of Mr S. Rajaratnam for his distinguished services to the nation.
