MULTILATERALISM AND GLOBAL SECURITY: NAVIGATING TURBULENT TIMES
From the South China Sea, to Ukraine, and to Gaza, it seems that the global security order is facing strains from all directions. With little indication of a cooldown in the near future, how can states and multilateral institutions navigate these turbulent times?
Featured Commentary
Volodymyr Zelensky at Shangri-La: Strategising Candid Multilateralism by Alan Chong
In this quarter’s featured commentary, Senior Fellow Dr Alan Chong recaps the events of the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue held last June 2024. The Dialogue featured addresses from key regional leaders, but the event’s highlight was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s surprise appearance on the dialogue’s final day. For Dr Chong, the value in multilateral forums like the Shangri-La Dialogue is that it allows smaller states to become active participants in the global security conversation and candidly share their thoughts on pressing security issues.
CMS Events and Outreach
This quarter, the Centre continued to host seminars featuring esteemed experts, and conducted outreach activities featuring the Centre’s researchers, sharing insights on current issues aimed at a wider audience:
- In our seminar Global Order & Multilateralism: Adaptation Beyond the State, Dr Paul Hansbury of the University of Warwick shared his thoughts on the resilience of the international order despite the various global challenges it currently faces – and why the answer lies in international institutions adapting local community practices and mobilisations.
- Schooling Multilateralism in Small Steps: Outreach to the Schools on ASEAN-China Ties features a guest lecture Senior Fellow Dr Alan Chong delivered to an audience of secondary students as part of the annual Nan Hua ASEAN Forum at the Nan Hua Secondary School.
