19 Sep 2024

Since coming to power in November 2022, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has played the leading role in guiding the direction and posture of Malaysia’s foreign policy. Of particular note is the visible and marked progress of Malaysia’s relations with China under Anwar’s administration.

This seminar traced the origins of the “special relationship” between Malaysia and China and highlighted the geopolitical context and considerations of both sides in their approach to bilateral relations. It also addressed pertinent questions about potential and ongoing tensions between the two countries.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A session that covered questions about the Malaysia’s strategic thinking vis-à-vis China, China’s view of Malaysia as Southeast Asian partner, and Malaysia’s handling of the South China Sea issue.
